FAQ: APDerm at MIT Health

Why has the partnership between MIT Health and AP Derm changed?

AP Derm and MIT Health have made this change to ensure that MIT Health patients continue to have convenient on-site access to dermatology services with lower average wait times than most practices in the greater Boston area. AP Derm now completely manages the on-site dermatology practice at MIT Health, similar to the on-site Bay State Physical Therapy practice.

This change means that AP Derm will be able to dedicate additional resources to the on-site practice and over time, further increase appointment availability to our patients. Patients also now have expanded access to the full AP Derm network of clinicians and services.

How do I schedule a dermatology appointment?

You can schedule an appointment with APDerm through their online portal or by calling 617-430-5955. Your appointment notifications and reminders will come from APDerm, not MIT Health and you will not see your dermatology appointments listed in HealthElife.

Will my insurance cover APDerm dermatology appointments?

Probably. APDerm visits at MIT Health are charged as if you were seeing an off-campus, in-network doctor. If you are on the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), your visits will apply to your deductible and will be charged at a rate of $25 per visit after your deductible has been met. If you are an employee on PPO+, you will pay the in-network specialty copay of $30. If you are on HDHP or a different insurance plan, check your policy to see how in-network specialty visits are charged.

If you are on non-MIT-sponsored insurance (such as your parents' or guardians' plan), that insurance company's rules will apply.

What happens if I need lab work as part of my APDerm dermatology visit?

APDerm can send orders to the Quest Diagnostics location on the first floor of MIT Health. Like all laboratory visits, your test will be subject to your insurance plan’s in-network deductibles and copayments. Check your insurance plan’s policy documents for more information.

How do I access my dermatology medical records?

Records of any dermatology visits you had before July 21, 2025, will remain available in HealthELife, but records of all visits after that date will only be located in the APDerm patient portal. Contact APDerm at 617-430-5955 or https://www.apderm.com/contact/ to learn more.

What happens to my dermatology prescriptions if they were prescribed by MIT Health?

APDerm has access to your MIT Health dermatology records, which include information about your dermatologist-prescribed medications. If you need to request a refill for any of your dermatology medications, log in to your account on the APDerm patient portal.

Is AP Derm part of MIT Health?

No. MIT Health partners with several outside medical groups to expand access to specialized healthcare services for the MIT community. These partners see patients in Building E23, offering convenient, on-campus access to high-demand services.

Although these services are located at MIT Health and may coordinate with MIT Health clinicians in areas such as Primary Care, the partner clinicians and staff are not MIT Health employees, and their services are not provided by MIT Health. Learn more.
