FAQ: APDerm at MIT Health

When will MIT Health's dermatology service transfer to APDerm?

APDerm will take over the former MIT Health dermatology space on July 21, 2025. When that happens, all existing appointments will be converted from MIT Health appointments to APDerm appointments. If you are a patient with an upcoming dermatology appointment, the following letter will explain what to expect. Your appointment time, location, and provider will not change, but how we notify you and your copayments will be different.

How do I schedule a dermatology appointment?

After July 21, 2025, you can schedule an appointment with APDerm through their online portal or by calling 617-430-5955. After that date your appointment notifications and reminders will come from APDerm, not MIT Health and you will not see your dermatology appointments listed in HealthElife.

Will my insurance cover APDerm dermatology appointments?

Yes, but APDerm visits at MIT Health are charged as if you were seeing an off-campus, in-network doctor. If you are on the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), your visits will apply to your deductible and will be charged at a rate of $25 per visit after your deductible has been met. If you are an employee or an individual covered by a different insurance plan, check your policy to see how in-network specialty visits are charged.

What happens if I need lab work as part of my APDerm dermatology visit?

Because APDerm orders your lab tests, your MIT Health laboratory visit will be charged as if you visited an outside clinic and will be subject to your insurance plan’s in-network deductibles and copayments. Check your insurance plan’s policy documents for more information.

In addition, though you can use the MIT Health laboratory for APDerm lab tests, you cannot book these lab appointments online. Instead, you will need to bring your paper order from APDerm to the laboratory service front desk check-in area on the first floor. Once you have checked in, you will be seen as quickly as possible.

How do I access my dermatology medical records?

Records of any dermatology visits you had before July 21, 2025, will remain available in HealthELife, but records of all visits after that date will only be located in the APDerm patient portal. Contact APDerm at 617-430-5955 or https://www.apderm.com/contact/ to learn more.

What happens to my dermatology prescriptions if they were prescribed by MIT Health?

After July 21, 2025, your dermatology medical records will be transferred to APDerm, which includes the information about your dermatologist-prescribed medications. If you need to request a refill for any of your dermatology medications, log in to your account on the APDerm patient portal.
