FAQ: Digital Clinical Assistant

What is Digital Clinical Assistant?

Digital Clinical Assistant is ambient listening technology application that uses artificial intelligence to record and transcribe your conversation with your clinician, generating a summary of key points that are used to document your visit in your medical record.

How does Digital Clinical Assistant work during my appointment?

Your clinician will inform you that Digital Clinical Assistant ambient listening will be used during your visit. The system will record your conversation and create a draft medical note detailing your visit. The recording is retained for seven days, so your clinician can refer to it while reviewing the note for accuracy. Then the recording is automatically deleted.

Once your clinician has finalized the note, it will be part of your medical record, and you can view the note in HealthELife. The recording is only used to create the note in your record. It is not used for any other purpose, including for training the Digital Clinical Assistant itself.

Will my clinician be looking at a computer screen the whole time I am in the exam room?

No. In fact, the opposite. Digital Clinical Assistant ambient listening allows your clinician to better listen to you and your needs because they will be spending less time typing notes and more time giving you their full attention.

Will my privacy be protected?

Yes. All notes are protected by HIPAA regulations. Only your clinician and care team will have access to the generated summary, and the assistant is designed to anonymize any personal information. The recording is automatically deleted when the summary note is generated, and the draft note lives behind the same HIPAA firewall as the rest of your medical record.

Do I have to use Digital Clinical Assistant ambient listening?

No. You have the right to opt out at any time. Just let your clinician know.

Can I access or request an audio copy of the recording or clinical note?

No. The recording cannot be downloaded or shared. The application retains the recording for seven days to give your clinician enough time to consult it as they review and edit your clinical note. Then the recording is automatically deleted.

You can view the clinical note after it has been reviewed and approved by your clinician. Check your HealthELife portal to see the recap of your appointment.

Who is responsible for the note generated by the Digital Clinical Assistant?

As with any clinical note, your clinician is ultimately responsible for the accuracy of the note in your medical record. They are responsible for reviewing the note for accuracy and making any needed edits. Only the final edited note becomes part of your medical record.

What happens if I notice an error in the clinical note?

If you identify an error in your record, you should contact your provider via a note in HealthELife. We will review the discrepancy and will be in touch.
