Reports to: Student Health Nurse Manager
Position Overview:
Registered Nurse, Student Health Programs demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care and execute clinical programs that improve the well-being and health literacy of the MIT student population. This role works closely with clinicians and administrators on a wide range of clinical programs to determine the population health needs of MIT students, conduct appropriate programming and provide direct clinical care.
This position works closely with other members of the student health team and is a resource to both internal and external stakeholders to assist in building health literacy so that each student is equipped to make informed healthcare decisions for both themselves and their families. The Registered Nurse is a member of the MIT Health Student Health Team acts as a clinical educator and provider of direct patient care.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities*
Student Health Programs
- Collaborate with students, parents/family members, deans, faculty, and other necessary partners to provide ongoing care management for both acute and chronic complex medical conditions
- Provide guidance and expertise to students after emergency room visits and medical hospitalizations to ensure that students have the necessary follow up medical care, referrals and connections with campus support resources
- Build collaborative relationships with all departments at MIT Health, Disability and Access Services (DAS), Division of Student Life (DSL), Housing and other key campus stakeholders to support and enhance programs with goals of improving student health
- Maintain clinical competency in order to conduct RN run clinics including but not limited to STI screening, contraceptive management and travel
- Collaborate with colleagues in evaluating and revising guidelines, policies and procedures as they pertain to RN led student health clinics
- Actively participate on MIT Health student focused working groups, specialty clinics and health education sessions
- Provides direct clinical care to students according to current health standards and MIT Health protocols and policies
- Maintains current knowledge of Massachusetts Department of Public Health requirements for vaccines and other pre-matriculation requirements for secondary education students
- Collaborate with outside vendor to ensure completion of required vaccines and tuberculosis screening for all incoming students
- Participates in completion of state and institute reporting as necessary
- Effectively communicates and educates students on systems, processes and standards
Health Care Literacy
- Provide health education, supportive counseling, and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other individuals or services at MIT Health
- Assess and identify areas of deficiency in student/ family health literacy and actively work on program planning and outreach to address these deficiencies
- Advise and implement appropriate outreach and educational programs that addresses current student health concerns such as chronic diseases, sexual health and utilization of health care, etc.
- Participate in presentations for student groups as requested
- Participate in student and family orientation events
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Licensure: Current RN license in Massachusetts. CPR Certified
- A current active BLS certification (in-person component required)
- Three or more years of professional nursing practice. Preferred experience as a Registered Nurse in an ambulatory clinic with experience in care management and college health
- Fluency with EMR systems, Cerner preferred. Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access
