Reports to: Manager, Medical Lab

Position Overview:

The Mammography Technologist, Lead oversees the technical operations of the Radiology department to ensure that mammography exams and radiologic imaging meet MIT Health standards and expectations as well as state and federal regulatory requirements. The position works closely with the manager to communicate effectively with patients as well as other members of the health care team. The technologist provides for the emotional, physical well-being, and safety of the patient while maintaining strict standards of patient confidentiality.  The Mammography Technologist, Lead will be the point person for technical questions.  The Mammography Technologist, Lead will perform mammography and radiology exams.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities*

  • Acts as lead and subject matter expert for all radiology activities.
  • Meets regularly with the manager to provide updates and insight.
  • Serves as a mentor/developmental advisor and/or a training resource to less experienced staff, providing an example with regard to quality of work.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all documentation to ensure a consistent state of regulatory readiness for all expected and unexpected inspections or regulatory visits.
  • Acts as primary representative of MIT Health Radiology during scheduled or unscheduled regulatory visits (i.e., annual state/MQSA inspection)
  • Performs all required QC and QA necessary to maintain the licenses of MIT Health Radiology
  • Ensures all compliance with licensing and regulatory standards (Federal, State, and ACR) in Mammography and radiology including assurance of accurate audit of required statistics and image selection
  • Trains new radiology technologists and mammographers, both permanent and temporary staff, on all aspects of the role.
  • Interviews and assess the technical skills of potential candidates
  • Helps others clarify problems; adapts and modifies established approaches including teaching others how to think through alternatives and choices.
  • Automatically makes more decisions on complex issues and priorities for own work area. Makes recommendations to solve and resolve highly complex problems.
  • Leads projects or short-term goals.
  • Participates in assessment and improvement of department activities
  • Performs lead apron testing for radiology and dental
  • Perform dosimeter badge testing
  • Operates all mammographic equipment to ensure proper image quality as outlined in the Mammography Policy and Procedure Manual.  Assures that all mammograms are of optimum quality so that image repeat analysis is less than five percent.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anatomical structures based upon knowledge of patient positioning (radiographic) and upon the principles of radiographic exposure, radiation physics, and principles of x-ray generation. Provides optimum quality radiographs through proper selection of imaging techniques.
  • Verifies proper exam in RIS system. Updates information, as necessary, to maintain accurate information.
  • Adheres to ALARA policy by keeping repeat imaging to a minimum
  • Prepares exams by providing prior images and/or sufficient information regarding outside images to be obtained quickly and efficiently to decrease delay in radiologic interpretation
  • Identifies opportunity for quality and process improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology
  • ARRT Registry Certifications in Radiography RT® and Mammography RT(M) certification from a recognized accredited institution. Massachusetts license with no constraints.  Certification from a recognized agency required
  • Massachusetts licensed in Radiography/ Mammography
  • Minimum of 4 years as a Licensed Radiology / Mammography Technologist
  • Must have successfully passed the ARRT exam in Mammography
  • Proven detailed knowledge of Mammography equipment and MQSA, ACR, state, and federal regulations as well as the ability to learn and master new tasks related to Image Quality and Safety
  • BLS/CPR required
  • Must be able to push, pull, or lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Proficiency in tasks employing arm/hand steadiness is required
  • Long periods of standing or walking are often required.  May have to remain in uncomfortable positions such as bending for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to multitask and maintain concentration on fine details
  • Must be able to prioritize and return to functions performed before interruption
  • Must be comfortable with potential exposure to body fluids, hazardous waste materials, poisonous substances, dust, chemicals, bodily injuries, loud or unpleasant noises, electrical hazards, electromagnetic radiation as in CRTs (VDTs)
  • Proficiency in basic computer functions including MS Office Suite
  • Professional manner and adhere to safety guidelines required
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as with people of various diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Detail-oriented with superb documentation skill

Salary Range: $52.88-$57.69/hour, final salary determined by MIT’s compensation team based on the skills and experience of the person hired
