Position Overview:

The Medical Assistant (MA), Primary Care is responsible for assisting physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses with evaluation, management, and treatment of patients during and between office visits and other tasks consistent with his/her training and skills. This role is the primary liaison contact between clinical staff and the patient. The Medical Assistant plays an active role in preparing for the daily operations of patient visits as well as implementing key activities. The MA leads the twice daily huddle sessions to ensure all pertinent patient information is communicated between all clinical staff as well as having all appropriate materials available so that care is delivered effectively and efficiently. Additionally, the MA manages HealtheLife requests, ensures the patient comprehends medical treatment information provided by each provider, as well as uses the best medium to follow up with each patient to ensure treatment plan compliance.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities*

  • Responsible for patient flow on the day of the visit by managing patient room arrival with provider availability working a minimum of two rooms (providers) simultaneously so that each room is always occupied and the patient is ready to be seen by a provider.
  • Adjusts inviting patients to exam rooms versus waiting for areas to ensure proper time spent in each area is appropriate. Explains delays and another context to continually keep patients informed.
  • Using prior agreed-upon methods, interrupts the provider when the appointment is running longer than scheduled to keep the day’s overall schedule on track. Work with front desk staff as needed to adjust patient arrival times when visits run unexpectedly long. Use good judgment as to when to encourage providers to be more efficient versus when to ask front desk staff to adjust arrival times.
  • Ensure all patients ‘check out’ with the front desk and have all necessary documents as well as follow-up information.
  • Act as chaperon to escort patients around the building as needed
  • Applies the principles of aseptic/sterile technique and infection control at all times
  • Record with accuracy and within all regulatory and policy guidelines:
    • Vitals (Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, O2 Sat, Resting Heart Rate) as per specialty.
    • Allergies · Medications
    • Chronic Problems
    • Past Medical History
    • Procedure History
    • Social History
    • Family History
  • Review the patient’s electronic medical record prior to visit
  • Obtain any and all pertinent medical records from providers seen within MIT Medical as well as other area providers in advance of the visit
  • Review tasks and act upon them as appropriate. Manage reminders for follow-up labs as well as other follow-up care.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Education: Graduate of an Accredited Medical Assistant program or has obtained a Medical Assistant Certification (AAMA, CCMA, RMA, NCMA) and a minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a physician office.
  • A current active BLS certification (with in-person component) is required for employment
  • Must be able to move 15 pounds or more, including but not limited to the placement of infants and children on examination tables or weighing scales.
  • Excellent critical thinking, communication, interpersonal, diplomacy, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Maintain CPR certification and participate in site-based CPR drills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a complex and busy environment and see them through to completion
