Position Overview:
The Optometrist provides evidence-based eye care to ensure a patient's health and well-being by recommending and prescribing medications and other treatment options using evidence-based care guidelines; delivering routine vision care; educating patients and staff on eye health, including contact lens care, disease state management, and safety factors. This role recommends appropriate patient follow-up; consulting with other health professionals to prepare and coordinate patient care plans in accordance with optometry scope of practice per state board. This role provides patients with appropriate referrals, as needed, to ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals, following up with patient and other health professionals regarding any outstanding diagnostics, tests, or other patient information as needed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities*
- Represents MIT Health in eye care and patient engagement by delivering exceptional customer service and high quality optometric care through all patient interactions and delivery of services.
- Conducts all services in accordance with clinical protocols and accepted standards of care.
- Reviews complete patient medical history information and performs comprehensive eye examinations.
- Recommends, orders, interprets, and assesses diagnostic tests and monitor effectiveness of treatments.
- Provides additional ocular treatments including but not limited to foreign body removal.
- Develops treatment plans based on patients' clinical presentation using evidence-based care guidelines. Ensures all patients received accurate diagnosis and appropriate recommendations.
- Prescribes eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other visual aids.
- Promotes high-value health care for all patients of MIT Health; assures timely access to care, is attentive to patient experience and cost of care; utilizes shared decision making when appropriate to establish a plan of care.
- Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical exam of patients.
- Assesses health status through interview, physical exam, and review of the medical record as evidenced by documentation in the medical record and presentation.
- Demonstrates assessment and management skills for common ambulatory primary care complaints, such as preventative medicine, wellness care, effects of chronic illnesses on ocular health dermatologic problems affecting the eyelids and surrounding skin mental health concerns.
- Synthesizes clinical information from the interview, physical exam, appropriate laboratory data, and medical record to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings as documented in the medical record and case presentation.
- Effectively uses clinical judgment and consultation to identify health problems and treatment strategies as documented in the medical record and case presentation.
- Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities · Monitors the effectiveness of treatments
- Provides health education, supportive counseling, and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other individuals or services at MIT Health.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- OD from an accredited optometry college with at least two years of work experience in a clinical setting providing comprehensive eye care that includes significant experience in the fitting of contact lens.
- Valid MA license and MCSR.
- Current card in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
- Residency training preferred.
- Ability to communicate clear and concise information to patient and staff.

Salary Range: $140,000 - $170,000 annually, final salary determined by MIT’s compensation team based on the skills and experience of the person hired
