Get ready for your ultrasound

You have been scheduled for an ultrasound test. Depending on the type of ultrasound you are having, your clinician may have instructed you to fast or to come to your appointment with a full bladder.

What does that mean?

  • Fasting: Eat nothing for at least eight hours before your appointment.
  • Full bladder: Empty your bladder one or two hours before your appointment. Then, about 30 minutes before, drink approximately one liter (32 oz., 4 glasses) of water. Do not empty your bladder again until after your ultrasound.

Does my ultrasound require preparation?

The table below lists all of the ultrasound tests that require the patient to prepare by fasting or having a full bladder. If you don’t remember what kind of ultrasound you are having, ask your provider by sending a message in HealthELife, or check the clinical note from your appointment. To find your clinical notes, log into HealthELife, click on “Medical Record” in the left-hand navigation, and then click on “Clinical Notes.”
