Reports to: Coordinator Clinical Services & Access Line, SMH&C
Position Overview:
The Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Access Line is expected to provide direct clinical services to MIT students and function as a member of the Mental Health & Counseling Service’s Walk-in Service/Access Team. The Access Team serves as the acute triage team for the Mental Health & Counseling Service. Responsibilities of the team include, but are not limited to:
- Responding to all triage calls and review of online triage forms
- Responding to urgent phone calls from MIT deans, faculty and staff
- Providing walk in consultations throughout the day
- Providing short term care for patients who require stabilization
- Assisting with patients being hospitalized
- Providing follow up to previous night’s after hours call
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides mental health screening and triage for referral, both in person and via telephone, of the student in their current situation and environment, as well as functional level.
- Develop initial interim treatment plans with appropriate and competent interventions.
- Responsible for urgent risk assessment and intervention in crisis situations that may involve issues of suicide, homicide, family violence, elder or child abuse.
- Provide brief, time-limited, bridging appointments until student starts with referred provider.
- Provides information, referral and creative resource acquisition for specific individual needs both within MIT Health, the Institute and the community as indicated. Assists students and their families to understand psychosocial factors impeding their maximal utilization of Institute resources.
- Collaborates with and provides consultation to the Care Team to promote a smooth, coordinated plan of care.
- Aids the team in understanding and integrating the significance of psychosocial factors in relation to patient's psychiatric challenges, treatment and recovery. Identifies psychosocial issues that may impede progress. Makes recommendations to the team regarding care and management.
- Assists Care Team to promote student and / or family level of understanding in order to make informed decisions.
- Provision of care in an interpersonally and culturally sensitive manner.
- Provides outreach, case finding/screening for high-risk issues that may impact on patient's progress, participation in plan, discharge or ability to utilize resources.
- Responds to urgent phone calls from MIT deans, faculty, and staff. · Providing walk in consultations throughout the day.
- Providing short term care for students who require stabilization.
- Assisting with students being hospitalized.
- Providing follow-up to the previous night’s after-hours call.
- Participate in on call rotation as scheduled for emergencies outside of working hours, e.g. evenings, nights, and weekends.
- Provision of outreach and education to students. Perform monthly outreach to assigned dormitory including identifying topics, advertising to solicit participation, and facilitating said event. Follow up afterwards as appropriate with individuals and/or campus partners.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Competencies:
- Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to students throughout the life span.
- Ability to task shift quickly in a busy and sometimes high utilization environment managing multiple simultaneous demands.
- Knowledge of casework process and community resources in relation to mental health and disability.
- Knowledge of current social work theory and practice, the ability to apply treatment and case management methods, and familiarity with community issues and resources.
- Understanding of organizational theory and practice in large systems and the knowledge of social and health care policies and systems.
- Ability to thoughtfully navigate competing stakeholder requests.
- High degree of diagnostic, treatment, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Analytical skills required assessing patient needs, to develop associated treatment modalities and to provide effective counseling.
- Computer skills and knowledge of general office programs, spreadsheet programs, database programs, and presentation programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- Master's Degree in Social Work from an institution accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
- Minimum 5 years post Master's Degree social work experience.
- Licensure at the Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) level in Massachusetts.
