Scheduling your next mammography appointment

Dear MIT Health mammography patients,

Due to unforeseen staffing departures at MIT Health, exacerbated by a nationwide shortage of radiology technologists, MIT Health will pause mammography services beginning January 1, 2026.

As we have shared in previous Patient Newsletters, unlike other services at MIT Health, we have struggled with finding qualified applicants to fill our open radiologic technologist roles, despite having some positions listed as available for more than two years. Because mammography is a highly regulated field, we are unable to solely staff the service with temporary employees.

Your health is of paramount importance, and it is critical that your future screenings are not adversely impacted by our staffing shortage. We encourage you to contact the Hoffman Breast Center at Mount Auburn Hospital when the time comes for your next exam. MIT Health has a longstanding partnership with the Hoffman Breast Center, and mammograms at Mount Auburn are reviewed by the same radiologists who previously reviewed mammograms at MIT Health. Additionally, the team at Mount Auburn can quickly and easily send the results to your MIT Health care team. You can make an appointment directly with Mount Auburn Hospital by calling 617-499-5755.

If you choose to get your mammogram at a different imaging center, be sure to ask them to send your results to MIT Health, so your clinical team can follow up and make sure the results are added to your medical record. When you make your request, make sure the imaging center knows both your provider’s name and that the results need to go to MIT Health. To send your previous MIT Health images and results to an imaging center other than Mt. Auburn, submit a record request form

We recommend that you schedule your mammogram at least three months in advance, as facilities across all of New England have incredibly constrained schedules due to the staffing shortage. Regardless of where you go for your mammogram, you will not need a clinician’s order or a referral.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we manage this frustrating situation and we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.
