Reports to: Clinical Director, Dental Services

Position Overview: 

The Dentist provides dental care to adult and pediatric MIT Dental patients. The dentist assesses patient dental health status through interview and physical exam and synthesizes this clinical information to formulate diagnosis, development of plan of care and treatment, implementation of treatment plan, and evaluation of follow-up strategies according to age-specific plans of care. Said work is done in accordance with MIT Dental Policies as well as State and Federal rules, regulations, and standard of care. The dentist also provides dental health education, supportive counseling, and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other individuals or services at MIT Dental as well as across the MIT community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities*

  • Promotes high-value dental health care for all patients of MIT Dental; assures timely access to care, is attentive to patient experience and cost of care; utilizes shared decision making when appropriate to establish a plan of care. 
  • Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical exam of patients.
  • Assesses dental health status through interview, Oral evaluation, and review of the dental record as evidenced by documentation in the dental record and presentation. 
  • Demonstrates assessment and management skills for common dental complaints, such as preventative medicine, wellness care, care of chronic dental illnesses and/or common infections. 
  • Triages emergencies and coordinates transfer of patients to specialist when needed. 
  • Synthesizes clinical information from the interview, and dental record to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings as documented in the dental record and case presentation.
  • Effectively uses clinical judgment and consultation to identify dental health problems and treatment strategies as documented in the dental record and case presentation. 
  • Formulates, directs, and monitors appropriate treatment, including prescription writing, which emphasizes a comprehensive approach to the needs of the individual and the family. 
  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Provides dental health maintenance and promotion for the patient and family including teaching, counseling, advising, anticipatory guidance. 
  • Provides dental health education, supportive counseling, and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other individuals or services at MIT Dental.
  • Documents professionally and in a timely manner, the subjective and the objective data and the clinical impressions and plan of care formulated during the patient encounter; documentation must support correct billing codes for the encounter. 
  • Synthesizes the information from the patient history, Oral evaluation, and radiographic findings to formulate a differential diagnosis. 
  • Documents appropriate clinical, radiographic findings and treatment options consistent with chief complaint and history. 
  • Document clinical encounters clearly, precisely and in a timely manner in the Electronic Dental Record.
  • Provides for continuity of care for the patient in collaboration with other dental health care team members as evidenced by appropriate referrals and follow-up on outcome of referral or consultation. 
  • Collaborates with colleagues to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise guidelines for clinical practice and standards. 
  • Coordinates the care of patients in order to provide safe, effective, efficient, and timely patient-centered care. Consults with other dentists regarding the care of patients for more complex diagnoses.

  • Maintains knowledge of current research and information related to practice and critically analyzes and applies new information to practice when appropriate. 
  • Participates in continuing education offerings within the MIT Dental Department as both educator and learner, including conferences, rounds, and training sessions.
  • Participates in continuing education offerings outside of the MIT Dental Department which contribute significantly to the clinical and professional development of a general dentist. 
  • Shares new information with colleagues, both formally and informally. 
  • Maintains records of continuing education as required for license. 
  • Provides leadership within the organization as an active member of staff meetings, committees, and workgroups. 
  • Actively participates by contributing ideas and suggestions at department-wide and service-specific staff meetings. 
  • Participates in professional, community, or governmental organizations to advance the profession and improve health care to consumers. 
  • Demonstrates respect for all patients and co-workers equally and maintains their dignity
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • DMD or DDS from an accredited dental school.
  • Current card in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Valid MA license, MA CSR and Federal DEA.
  • Ability to communicate clear and concise information to patient and staff
  • Experience with computer systems required, Dentrix Enterprise Web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
